Stakeholders have decried the harmful contamination of Osun River and have levied blame on the continuing activity of illegal mining, putting the lives of Osun State residents and its environs in danger.

Lamenting the possible overlapping effect of making Osun River impure, the Osun State President of Miners Association & Union, Chief Oluwaseun Ajeigbe JP warned that the after effects of polluting the river would cause the destruction of biodiversity, contaminate food chain or might lead to an epidemic outbreak.

Taking cognisance of its social impact, the Osun river which flows southward from Ekiti through Osun, Oyo, Ogun and into Lagos lagoon has become of concern to residents and Civil Society Organisations, following the contamination of the river by activities of illegal miners in the state who have continued to mine chemical elements without care for the public interest and without seeking government approval.

Stakeholders however have appealed to Osun state and federal government to intervene and address the miners abuse of the river and community lands where they ply their illegal mining trade.
